Commanding respect and demanding respect are mutually exclusive.
And what does this have to do with Korea?
If you live here, you know.
(and its counterpart:) "The empty can makes the most noise."

I am assuming here. But are you relating to those Koreans older than you who demand respect without commanding it. Or are you relating this to 'cheong'. Just trying to tease out what your saying or what I can't see.
I have a feeling my buddy was evoking those older gentlemen who start talking loudly when they feel like they're being disrespected. I might be wrong; that's certainly the image it evokes in me.
On the other hand, I know some other older Korean gentlemen who command a lot of respect because they've never asked for it: they just behave in a way that deserves it. My coworkers and I (who teach adults) like to call them "cool ajosshis"
Cheong is just a complex word that I don't even know where to start with it...it can mean so many things.
